Cheer up. The skill of the Pilot is best evidenced in a storm, so is the Lord’s wisdom & faithfulness toward his children, & so is the sincerity of their hearts toward him.

Newton to Ryland, March 1782.

Some Christians seem to be accepted in their own experience, at least, that is their apprehension. When their spirit is lively, and their hopes bright, they think God accepts them, for they feel so high, so heavenly-minded, so drawn above the earth! But when their souls cleave to the dust, they are the victims of the fear that they are no longer accepted. If they could but see that all their high joys do not exalt them, and all their low despondencies do not really depress them in their Father’s sight, but that they stand accepted in One who never alters, in One who is always the beloved of God, always perfect, always without spot or wrinkle, or any such thing, how much happier they would be, and how much more they would honour the Saviour! Rejoice then, believer, in this: thou art accepted “in the beloved.” Thou lookest within, and thou sayest, “There is nothing acceptable here!” But look at Christ, and see if there is not everything acceptable there.

“Believing this precedes understanding how it works. God says it. I believe it. Now I am spending a lifetime learning what it is like to live this way.” JP

Wow. I want one. Check out this funny article on the Stuff Christians Like about what you could use it for!

The gospel is not an employment ad. God is not an employer looking for employees. He is an eagle loking for people who will take refuge under his wings. He is looking for people who will leave father and mother and homeland or anything else that may hold them back from a life of love under the wings of Jesus.

John Piper. (quoted in Nathan’s sermon at Grace Church Bristol)

When I have learnt to love God better than my earthly dearest, I shall love my earthly dearest better than I do now.
Insofar as I learn to love my earthly dearest at the expense of God and instead of God, I shall be moving towards the state in which I shall not love my earthly dearest at all.
When first things are put first, second things are not suppressed but increased.

C. S. Lewis, Letters of C.S. Lewis (8 November, 1952)

If you have ever walked among giant redwoods, you will never be overwhelmed by the size of a dogwood tree. Or if you have been through a hurricane, a spring rain is nothing to fear.
If you have been in the presence of the almighty God, everything that once controlled you suddenly has less power.
Help me to honour thee by believing before I feel,
for great is the sin if I make feeling a
cause of faith.
